The Department of History is one of the major academic divisions of Majuli University of Culture, offering Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Ph.D. programs. Established in 2021, the Department is committed to imparting quality education and fostering research in the discipline of history. The curriculum has been meticulously designed to cater to the academic needs of students from Majuli and its neighbouring regions, integrating a broad spectrum of historical studies that encompass cultural transformations, human evolution, gender perspectives, political developments, and the histories of India and the wider world. The Department envisions achieving academic excellence while promoting a comprehensive, critical, and analytical understanding of history. This intellectual foundation equips students to explore diverse career avenues. One of the fundamental objectives of the Department is to advance historical studies and research, with a particular emphasis on the rich cultural heritage and traditions of India and Assam. Through a combination of classroom instruction and various academic activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences, the Department seeks to cultivate a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
To enhance the pedagogical experience, the Department actively encourages students to engage in debates and discussions on historical themes. Future initiatives include supplementing lectures with visual aids such as maps, as well as tangible historical artifacts including stone tools, old coins, ancient pottery, paintings, and manuscripts from private collections of faculty members. The screening of historical films and documentaries will further enrich students' understanding, making the discipline more immersive and interdisciplinary. Additionally, students have access to the University Library, which is well-equipped with essential academic resources. The Department is also dedicated to preparing students for various competitive examinations, including NET, SLET, and Civil Services, thereby broadening their professional opportunities. Through these efforts, the Department of History remains steadfast in its mission to nurture historical inquiry, promote scholarly research, and contribute meaningfully to the academic landscape of Majuli University of Culture.
