About this Department

     The Department of Assamese was established in 2021 to fulfill the vision of disseminating knowledge and imparting quality education in Majuli along with other underdeveloped areas surrounding the Island. The Department offers Master’s in Assamese, UG in Assamese, Certificate in Functional Sanskritand Certificate in Manuscript Studies and PG Diploma in Translation Proficiency. The aim and basic focus of the Department is to prepare and appreciate skilled and employable human resources of the region and the country.

     The Department has a group of dedicated, energetic, highly active and enthusiastic faculty members committed to guide and encourage the students and also delivers high quality education. Excellence in teaching and research in Assamese Language, Literature and Culture at higher level of education is the basic thrust of the Department. The Department currently offers four-year (As per NEP 2O20) Bachelor of Arts (AssameseHonours) course. Students enrolled in the Department of Assamese can expect:

Objectives

  1. To offer degree, diploma and certificate level programmes of study in various emerging language and literature subjects.
  2. To offer job oriented language and literature programmes in line with the national and regional demands for manpower.
  3. To undertake various research and academic activities for furtherance of education in the region.
  4. To contribute to the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage, literature, traditional knowledge and environment by conducting short programmes, workshops, seminars and research in interdisciplinary fields.

Seat Capacity

     Though a growing demands of students to study Assamese in MUC we provide 50 and 30 seats in Post Graduate and Under Graduate level respectively. The seat capacity for Diploma and Certificate courses will be based on the decision of course coordinators and University Administration.

 

Teaching Methods

  • Lectures:Lectures are the main parts of classroom teaching in the department of Assamese in MUC. Lectures typically last around 60 minutes depending on the subject which covers up to the current research on that particular topic.
  • Seminars:Seminars are one of the crucial parts of teaching-learning methods of the department of Assamese which provides the opportunity to discuss on particular topics more efficiently which leads the practice of detailed study leads to find out further research needs on that area.
  • Home Assignments:Assignments are another significant part which endeavors to enhance the quality of academic writings of the students along with research publication.
  • Group Discussion:Discussions on different areas and prospects of Language, Literature and Culture in groups is another important part of teaching-learning methods of the department.
  • Practical:These are the Laboratory classeswhich provides for language learning practices using different software Praat/SILetc.
  • Consultancy Classes:Consultancy classes are conducted in regular basis which consults about study of the students, observe the level of intelligibility on particular topics, preparation of competitive exams(along with NET/SET) and provides motivational lecturesfor physical well-being and mental health fitness.
  • Field Trips:Several courses include opportunity to go on field trips cum study visits. In this regard the supervisors provide you the knowledge techniques of data collection in particular areas for further research studies.
  • Independent research:It’s a chance to carry out your own research, testing of hypothesis and theories and put forward your own research which might even get published while you are a PG or UG student.

Facilities

  • Library:You certainly won’t be short of library in MUC. There is a departmental libraryalong with the central libraryof MUC will surely be able to satisfy your expectation to acquiring knowledge in different aspects of language, literature and culture.
  • Museum:The department of Assamese has ‘North-East Ethnic Museum’ which opens to students of MUC. The fascinating exhibits range from North-eastern ethnic wears to daily used specific stuffs of the people of North-East India according different periods of time.

Programme Details Offered by Assamese Department of MUC

 

1. MA in Assamese

Objectives:The programme is designed to familiarize the learners with both theoretical and practical aspects of Language, Literature and Culture acquaint them with Research ethics and enable them to put communication practice within the socio-cultural realm and utilize language and literature for overall development.

2. Bachelor Degree (Assamese Honours)

Objectives: The main objective of the programme will be to expose the interested group of learners to a facility that is equivalent to the regular programme offered by the concerned department of the university/universities. During the study of varied areas under an Assamese literature degree, students will scrutinize and debate a variety of texts and contexts, movements, periods and critical approaches, theory and study of language that are pretty central to modern knowledge and communication system.
